Home Insurance
Commonly also known as homeowner’s insurance, protects you financially when the unexpected happens on your property. This type of insurance policy is required by almost all types of mortgage companies and is essential from a risk perspective even if you’ve paid off your home. Basic homeowner’s insurance policies protect the structure of your home and your belongings within it. Most also include a liability policy, which helps protect you financially in the event that you are sued when someone is injured on your property or even off of your property, if you’re found at fault. A good policy not only will pay for the cost of replacement, repair, or medical bills after an accident, but also for legal fees you could incur when you’re sued.
Protecting You from Financial Loss
Most home insurance policies cover losses resulting from these four, basic types of damage and injury:
- Interior Damage
- Exterior Damage
- Damage to or Loss of Personal Property Inside the Home
- Injury to Another Person While On the Property
To ensure that you will be properly protected from loss, it’s important that you carefully detail all of your property. Your policy cannot cover any items which have not been itemized, so you will need to take your time in properly listing and providing a value for each item you want protected.
It’s important to note that a standard homeowners’ insurance policy does not cover damage from an earthquake or flood. If you are in an area at high risk for either of these, we can talk to you about an umbrella policy to help protect you.
Home Insurance Discount Possibilities
There are a few ways that you might be able to save on homeowners insurance, some of which you can control and some of which simply exist part and parcel with your home.
Gated Community and HOA: Homes in a gated community or governed by a homeowners’ association are perceived by insurance companies as safer in many cases. You may be able to save on your monthly premiums if your home is in a protected area or neighborhood with an HOA. The idea is that you and your home are less likely to fall victim to theft or vandalism with this added level of security. If you aren’t in a gated community or HOA, you may be eligible for discounts with the installation of surveillance cameras or other safety equipment.
Claims-free Credit: You may be eligible for a discount on your home insurance if you have no claims in the recent past for home insurance. This discount is known as a claims-free credit. The time you must have gone without a claim varies by insurance carrier, but 10 or more years is a good start.
Home Renovations: Discounts are sometimes available to homes with recent renovations, such as new wiring, new plumbing, specialized impact-resistant roofing, and other improvements. These renovations decrease the likelihood of accidents like fires or weather damage, which means you pose less of a risk to lenders.
There are several other types of discounts to consider when it comes to home insurance. Our agents can walk you through these solutions to see how much you could save.
