California Good Driver Law
Everyone knows when you get a ticket or have and accident the rates on your auto insurance policy go up... but for how long and how much? Well it really depends on the insurance carrier and the type of moving violation that you receive. For minor violations (1 DMV point) such as speeding tickets or non-injury accidents your rates will be escalated for 3 years from the conviction date (Usually the day you pay your fine).Your rates will increase, but usually only around $10-15.00 per month. If your rate increases more than that you may want to see if your agent can shop your policy around with other carriers for a better rate.
If you receive a 2 point DMV violation such as a DUI, Reckless Driving or an accident involving bodily injury in the state of California, you will lose your California good driver discount. This usually causes a pretty substantial increase in your premiums. No less than 20% but sometimes as much as double. A bodily injury accident will stay on your driving record for 3 years but some carriers will check history for up to 5 years for company eligibility. DUI’s will cause you to lose your California good driver discount for 10 years from the conviction date of the violation.
