After Market Modifications and your Vehicle Warranty

I am sure you have heard the myth that if you get a lift kit on your vehicle it will void your manufactures warranty. This is not exactly the case. The reason that many people have to pay out of pocket for a repair normally covered by the warranty is not because the warranty itself was voided but because the aftermarket modification caused the problem that the warranty claim is about. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that the manufacturer cannot simply void the entire warranty because you used aftermarket parts; however, if they can prove that the aftermarket modification had anything to do with the unusual wear or mechanical breakdown then they do not have to warranty that particular breakdown. That being said, it would be very difficult for you to prove that your aftermarket parts were not the cause of the breakdown because something as simple as a lift is connected to many of your vehicles other components. If anything is done incorrectly, they will probably assume it is due to the modifications. The only way to fully ensure that your lift kit and other modifications will be covered under your warranty is to have the modifications done by an authorized dealership. They will know the manufactures specifications for lifting your vehicle and can advise you of the manufactures recommendations. It will also ensure the lift is installed safely and correctly and that it will be warrantied in the event something goes wrong.
