Man's Best Friend. Labrador, Beagle, Pomeranian, Maltese, what breed is your dog? Are you protected if they bite someone?

After being in insurance for 15 years I have seen the evolution of the dog exclusion. From 1995 to present day the threat of certain breeds has gone from Pitbull and Rottweiler in 95 to Presa  Canario, Doberman, Pitbull, Rottweiler, Chow, Akita, and German Shepherd in 2010.

With dog bite claims on the rise more and more carriers are automatically excluding certain breeds. This may not be a concern to you when you first purchase your home insurance and do not have a dog at that time. But let's say two years down the road you now feel the need to get a dog. Depending on what breed you get and what insurance carrier you have you may not have coverage for the dog.

It is important to discuss this with your agent. By reviewing the exclusion section in your policy you will understand what your policy actually excludes. For help in reviewing your insurance please do not hesitate to give our office a call.
